Wednesday 3 March: agreement in the Po strike seemed imminent as union and management continued their talks. The PM and TUC leaders are to meet soon after a letter to No 10 from Mr Feather. China succeeded in launching its second space satellite and Mr Aristotle Onassis failed to take over the Belfast shipyard of Harland and Wolff.

Thursday 4 March: striking Ford workers rejected an improved offer from the company and returning PO strikers revolted against the Proposed settlement. Relations between East and West Pakistan were reported to be ap- proaching a state of violent secession. Mr Maudling re-affirmed the Government's support of the Irish PM at Stormont.' Friday 5 March: Lockheed reacted icily to the Government's offer of £60 million to save the an 211. Riots broke out again in the Falls Road as Mr Maudling met Unionist MPS. Tuesday 9 March: in the world heavyweight title fight in New York Cassius Clay was out- poin•ted by Joe Frazier. A record trading surplus of £631 million for 1970 was announced. Exports exceeded imports for the first time in 12 years.
