PROSPEROUS GAS INDUSTRY.

It would be difficult to fmd a more striking example of an industry triumphing over threatened competition than that of the , great gas companies of the country which, notwithstanding the ever-increasing use of electricity in certain , directions, have nevertheless succeeded in not only maintaining but of establishing on a firm foundation their own prosperity. In each succeeding year the Chairman of the. Gas Light and Coke Co. seems to be in the position of being able to make increasingly satisfactory statements to the stockholders. Moreover, these statements latterly have also been satisfactory in the sense That increased pros- ]erity'r has been accompanied by a reduction in the price of ,gas. Thanks to the substantially strong financial position of the undertaking, the company has further, strengthened its position recently by being able to make an issue of 5-per cent. Debenture Stock for £2,000,000 on terms thoroughly satisfactory to the company. Sir David Milne-Watson was also able to tell the stockholders at last week's meeting that the savings during the year under coal and oil exceeded £1,400,000, while economies have been secured in some other directions.
