NEWS OF THE WEEK.
OUR first duty this week is to offer our most hearty congratu- lations to Lord Derby. He has done the nation a great service, and done it in the best possible way; that is, with tact, temper, and an overmastering patriotism. One has been conscious all through that his ends have been the ends of a patriot, and his moans loyalty to the nation and the Government with which he has been acting. There has clearly not been a thought of self-advancement, or of whether he was running a risk of failure, or of how to do the job so that he would be moat in the limelight and get the maximum of praise and honour. When the inspiration of pure selfish ambition is so often visible, one must be pardoned a little enthusiasm in one's praise of Lord Derby.
