is a particularly disagreeable specimen of the "new fiction." The story is indeed old enough, "lust hard by hate," but there is something novel in the mode of combination. We can only ask in still increasing surprise,—Is it possible that there are readers —not a few morbid natures here and there, but an indefinitely large public—for stories of this kind?
