Esepositions of Holy Scripture. By Alexander Maclaren, D.D. (Hodder and
Stoughton. 7s. 6d. per vol.)—Of the two volumes now before us, V. completes the historical books of the Old Testament, dealing with 2 Kings viii.-end, Chronicles, Ezra, and Nehemiah ; while VI. treats of Esther, Job, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes. The allotment of space in VI. is noteworthy : Esther, 28 pages; Job, 42; Proverbs, 218; Ecclesiastes, 114. In view of the relative bulk of the books, this is remakable. It is a pity that in the Anglican Services it is only the occurrence of a late Easter that gives the Sunday congregation the opportunity of hearing a chapter from the Proverbs. The book will be used on one Sunday in the present year, on one in 1911, and after that not again before 1916.
