John Bull's body

Sir: I would fully endorse your praise last week of the achievement of Andreas Whittam-Smith since he became the Editor of the Investors Chronicle.

However, the Investors Chron- icle's gain is the SPECTATOR'S loss. Mr Whittam-Smith used to write a splendid and informative City column for the SPECTATOR under the name of John Bull. Since he joined the Investors Chonicle his place on the SPECTATOR has been taken by someone calling himself Skinflint, who seems to find it necessary to pad out his erratic comments will ill-founded abuse of Your attentive reader, Anthony Harris Economics Editor, the Guardian, London Wall, London rc2 Ps I have been Economics Editor of the Guardian responsible for the general policy and in particular for the economic and political com- ment of the business pages since 1969, and much enjoyed the year in which Andreas worked along side me as City Editor, responsible for investment, companies, bank- ing and other such matters.
