The morality of profit

Sir : In his extremely interesting article 'The morality of profit' (6 March), Mr Enoch Powell remarks that the market mechanism is an instinctive one, and that no amount of the reasoned argument which the antipathy to this instinctual mechanism provokes, will be suffi- cient to exorcise it. In his Note Books, Samuel Butler remarks of life and love `To live is like to love—all reason is against it, and all healthy instinct for it'. Might not the same be said about profit.
