Sir: Mr Carmichael (letters, 6 March), with the combination of

discourtesy and inaccuracy which we have grown accustomed to ex- pect from EuroBrits. accuses me of 'wog-bashing' because I described the Common Market as 'the Eura- sian melting pot'.

Mr Carmichael possibly does not know that- entry means not only rule from Brussels. but also ab- solutely unlimited immigration with no discrimination on grounds of nationality for the Six, who in- clude Martinique, Guadeloupe, La Reunion. Guyana, and who will soon include Turkey. It follows that by 1984 or thereabouts 60,000,000 Asiatics will be entitled to come here, and our experience hitherto with restricted immigra- tion does not lead me to believe that they will be slow in coming.

Mr Carmichael possibly does not know that free movement of capi- tal is required by the EEC, which means that our own industrialists will be able to follow Ford's ex- ample and move out, and many of our most skilled workmen will have, to go abroad to work. This is by no means inconsistent with mil- lions of Asiatics coming here to work in low-paid jobs, as the Registrar-General's Quarterly Re- turn No 485 showed that over the last five years 799,000 net Britons emigrated and 323,000 net non- Britons immigrated (apart from Irish). The effect of joining is there- fore to scatter the British nation to the four winds and to populate these islands with an alien and largely coloured mass, so that 'Eurasian melting pot' is a perfectly accurate description of the EEC.

I trust that in future letters Mr Carmichael will verify his facts and observe the normal courtesies of debate.
