Hutchinson' s History of the Nations. VoL L Edited by
Walter Hutchinson. (Hutchinson and Co. 10s. 6d. net.)— This is the first volume of a popular history of the world, which has the commendable feature of being written by men who are high authorities on their subjects. Thus Professor W. M. Flinders Petrie contributes the account of the Egyptians; Professor H. A. Giles summarizes Chinese history in fifty pages; Sir Richard Temple writes on India; Mr. Leonard W. King deals with the Babylonians, Hittites, Assyrians, Phrygians, Lydians, and other nations of Asia Minor ; and Dr. J. P. Mahafry sketches the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and Greeks. The chief feature of the book is its wealth of illustration;whict leaves on many pages little room for letterpress. Many of these illustrations, from monuments, coins, and other contemporary sources, are of great interest ; but we cannot say as much of the numerous purely imaginative pictures, which include coloured plates of the battle of Salamis and the death of Cleopatra:
