PORTUGUESE SLAVERY AND THE BRITISH ALLIANCE.
[To Tun EDITOR OP THE "SPECTATOR."] you permit me to make a correction in the letter -written from San Thome on February 29th P I stated iltiet cilia that "the Republican Government promised—and I am satisfied loyally performed that promise—to prevent any further recruiting of servicaes pending legislation designed to prevent abuses." I regret to say that just before leaving the island reliable evidence was placed in my possession which convinced me that slaves, as distinct from genuine servicaes, have been brought into the island within the last twelve months. This evidence with other facts will be given to the public at the Society's annual meeting on April 23rd next, but I am precluded from publishing this at the moment, as is special meeting of my committee has been called to consider the whole situation.—I am, Sir, &c, JOHN H. HARRIS, The Anti.Slavery and Aborigines' Protection Society. Denison House, Vauxhall Bridge Road, London, S.W.
