Mr. Smillie on Thursday week made a violent speech in

Glasgow, as if to show that he was not, after all, a man of peace. He accused the Government of seeking to " play the capitalists' game" by defeating the miners, as a preliminary to destroying the other trade unions. It is a monstrous charge which Mr. Smillie must know to be untrue. He insinuated also that the Government was preparing to overawe the strikers with machine- guns and aeroplanes. Mr. Smillie can hardly complain if, after uttering such wild misrepresentations, be is not taken seriously when he professes a desire to increase the output of coal. It is a sad misfortune for the miners, most of whom are honest and patriotic citizens, that they should allow themselves to bo repre- sented by embittered revolutionaries of Mr. Smillic's type.
