SIR,—Far be it from 'me to defend the prices charged

for British books in Canada, which are often excessive. But the basis is almost invariably decided in Toronto, and in most cases, even though he supplies the books on preferential terms, the British publisher has virtually no say.

There are two factors your correspondent overlooks: 1. Canadian booksellers expect (and obtain without question from the States) a much higher rate of discount than is usual in Britain, and this must of necessity be reflected in the price charged to the public.

2. There is a sales tax in Canada, from which, I am ashamed to
