A Press Association telegram gives the first details of what
happened at Hangchow' just before its occupation by the Cantonese. The northern soldiers when making ready to abandon the city demanded money from the Chamber of • Commeree.• This was refused, and the northern soldiers—Sun ('huan-fang's men—then set to work to loot about a square mile of the city containing the best shops. In order to stop the looting the Chamber handed over 40,000 dollars. When the Cantonese were on the point of entering Hangehow armed civilians turned on the northern soldiers and also upon anti-Cantonese civilians and massacred all they could find. It is added that the Cantonese did not do much looting except in the houses of foreigners. * *
