THE GULLS ON THE THAMES
[To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.] Sut,—In the interesting article on London Starlings the writer gives a date (1890) for the appearance of the gulls on the Thames. I find the following in my note-book under
date February 28th, 1888 :— " Saw a curious sight from Waterloo Bridge ; about sixty or seventy gulls congregated on the river beneath. They seem to have passed the day there, as I saw them again on my return about 4.30.'
I had been crossing the river almost daily from 1883 and had not observed any gulls previously.—! am, Sir, &c., The Upland', Aldeburgh, Suffolk. ARTHUR T. w.sis.
