The Place - Names of Lancashire. By Henry Cecil Wyld, in col-

laboration with T. Oake Hirst. (Constable and Co. 26s. net.)— We would gladly give to this volume a notice more adequate to the learning and industry which have been employed in completing it. The plan is to give the spellings of the various names as they appear at various dates, Domesday Book (1086) being the first in order where it is available. We may take " Knowsley " as a specimen. " D.B. gives Phenulweslei." Of this our authors remark that this form "for a wonder at once puts us on the right track regarding the origin of the name." It is a personal name, a variety of the familiar Cynewulf.
