What is wanted in the present situation on the part

of the House of Lords is clear sight, patience, and judgment. These are qualities which belong in a high degree to Lord Lansdowne, and we sincerely hope that they will be given full play. We cannot, however, forget what happened in the case of the throwing out of the Budget, and how wise strategy was overborne by the spirit of political speculation. We can only hope that the lesson has been learnt, and that the Unionist leaders will realise that the supreme need is to meet our opponents, as soon as possible, on the ground that divides them most, and not on the ground that divides them least.
