SOME BOOKS OF THE WEEK.

Intim in this column does not necessarily preclude subsequent review.] The French Quarterly, just issued but dated March (Mare chester University Press, 3s. net), contains a capital article by Mr. R. L. G. Ritchie " On Translating from French." It is widely believed that anyone can translate French prqse quickly and accurately. Mr. Ritchie's detailed discussion of an appar- ently simple passage from Flaubert will cause his readers to think differently. The subject is by no means unimportant, for articles in the French Press, when incorrectly rendered by hasty translators, may do a great deal of harm that their authors did not intend.
