The revival in the shipyards has caused the Federation of

Shipbuilding and Engineering Trades to demand an increase of 10s. a week on time rates with a proportionate addition to piece rates. This is the revival of a demand made in 1925, but then both sides, greatly to their credit, agreed to postpone the discussion and to hold a joint inquiry into the costs of production and foreign com- petition. The employers have promised to consider the present application and to arrange for a conference as soon as poisible.
