..-Chttna and the Chinese. By EdmUnd Plauchut. Translated by Mrs.

Arthur Bell (N. D'Anvers). (Hurst and Blackett. 2s. 6d.)— This is a lively account of China, past and present, characteristic of the author's nationality. M. Plauchut has been to China. We hear of him at Canton, at Macao, and at Shanghai ; but we imagine that . his travels were not extensive. But, then, who can describe a country . and a population so vast on the strength of personal observation ? It is more to the purpose to know how to use authorities.
