In the middle of the Free Trade controversy of the
first years of this century a small boy remarked : "What splendid smugglers' stories my children will hear if Tariff Reform is passed!" The Man in the Box is an example of these stories, as apparently the embargoes of the War now make smuggling worth while. The point of the story is that "the man' did not remain "in the box" and has to be chased through the volume.
