It is much the same thing as happens when two
armies are facing each other in line. After perhaps a long period of quiet a few rifle shots ring out and the firing is taken up all along the line, though nobody quite knows why. There is an excellent anecdote of two men who, as the result of a series of events, found themselves unwillingly compelled to fight a duel. When they were actually on the duelling ground one of the principals whispered in the ear of the other, " I don't think you want to kill me, and I'm sure I don't want to kill you. This business is entirely the fault of those infernal seconds. If you will shoot your second I'll shoot mine."
