The new Kingdom of Egypt was proclaimed on Thursday, March

16th. The Sultan assumed the style of King Fuad There were public rejoicings in Cairo and the other towns. The faction formerly led by Zaghlul tried to raise a riot in Cairo but were repressed by the Egyptian police. The Egyptian troops, on the other hand, proved untrustworthy and had to be with- drawn.
