.A few months ago it would have been thought impos-

sible that M.. Venizelos should return to active political life in Greece. Recently, however, there have been sure signs that he had become impatient of his self-imposed retirement, and that he was only awaiting an opportunity to appear again at the centre of affairs. On Tuesday the Government of the veteran M. Zaimis resigned, and the hand of M. Venizelos became suddenly visible behind the scenes. M. Kaphandaris resigned the leadership of the PrOgressive Liberal Party, admittedly because he felt that if he did not cease to lead M. Venizelos' old party M. Venizelos would lead him.
