THE LOSS OF THE TITANIC.'

[TO 'TIIII EDITOR OF TUX "SPECTATOR."]

SIR,—The universal recognition of the heroism with which the English and American male passengers in the late catastrophe sacrificed themselves to the rule "women and children first" suggests two important ethical questions: (1) How old is that rule P Would a Greek or a Roman have consented that the life of a woman should be preferred to that of a citizen and warrior P (2) How widely recognized is the rule P Is it more than an Anglo-American custom P Your readers will have noticed that one passenger with an Italian name has frankly avowed in the Vienna Press that he not only escaped amongst the women, but did it by a fraud—dis- guising himself in the clothes of a sailor.—I am, Sir, &e., Downing College, Cambridge.
